My first apartment was a basement suite in a four storey walk-up apartment building a few kilometres from campus.
If I were to do it differently, I would have lived downtown in a nicer high rise (maybe with a room mate) and either cycled or taken the LRT to campus.
Apartments are so expensive to rent now; I would encourage more people especially students to explore room and board options until they can afford to buy.
