Even when you've taken every precaution, accidents can still happen. When they do, it's important to know how to handle them. If you've had an accident on the water, contact your agent for assistance. Depending on where the accident occurred, you'll need to also take additional steps.
Call your local Canadian Coast Guard rescue coordination centre or local law enforcement agency to report an accident.
After an accident, U.S. federal regulations (33 CFR 173.55) require the operator of any vessel that is numbered or used for recreational purposes, in this case a boat, to submit an accident report. You must report the accident when:
The boat operator must submit the report to authorities in the state or U.S. territory where the accident happened. If the operator can't, the boat owner must submit the report.
If someone dies within 24 hours of the accident or is injured or missing, reports should be made within 48 hours of the accident. If only the boat and/or property is damaged, you have up to 10 days after the accident to report it.
